Peggy

my art has gravitated to a digital form over the last year...i still make some of the components in the traditional way but the end product is a digital picture. i've been researching mediums to best showcase my pieces besides just prints and have decided encaustics fits the bill.

i've read a multitude of articles...ordered some dvd lessons...bit the bullet and purchased enough supplies to teach myself the process. i'm VERY excited about this new medium.

i decided my first project would be a tribute to my muse....the crow. one of the articles that i read was by Bridgette Guerzon Mills. she used the plaster tape to frame pictures and strung them as prayer flags to honor the victims of Japans earthquake and tsunami. (based on tibetan prayer flags)

i used four inch wide plaster tape cut into 6" sections...wet and then hardened as the front of the frame..... the center was cut out with a razor after hardening. i printed my photos and cut them so there was about a 1/4" overlap when placed on the cut out. then i dipped my photos in wax and laid them on the frame with the front of the picture facing down. next i cut small strips of the plaster tape...wet them... and lay them around the edge of the waxed photo...letting them dry to the front of the frame and encase the picture between the frame and the strips. the plaster tape frame is then coated with several layers and colors of wax....stained with oil paint...and coated with a final layer of wax. holes are then punched in the top of the frame and the "flags" can be strung together and hung in a window so the light shows thru the picture....just no direct sunlight to melt the wax.

these are bridgettes instructions. they can be found in the autumn 2011 edition of somerset workshop magazine....along with some of her other projects. she is one of the wonderful artists that have inspired me to join the encaustic community.

i also have a book co-authored by stephanie lee and judy wise (i have judys encaustic dvd) called Plaster Studio....the possibilities with plaster and wax are endless.....did i mention i'm really excited about this?????
