Whispers…...

this is an abandoned cotton mill in the town where i live….
i'm so drawn to these forgotten building spirits…
they whisper my name...

Jody, I love this painting. My grandfather worked in a cotton mill in High Point NC for fifty years. My grandmother started work at a cotton mill in fourth grade, I have a warm place in my heart for these abandoned mills.

Thanks Tracey….cotton mills were the heart of the town where I live leaving it pretty much a ghost town when they closed. Chester has two 'mill villages' for the Gayle and Eureka mills... owned by Leroy Springs. There is still much pride and good memories in the older citizens that grew up in these villages but sadly they have become high crime areas now…edging out the remaining original families.

I didn't grow up here, Sally, so I don't have first hand experience in the Mill life but from talking to the folks here it was like an extended family. Ever so often SC Public TV will air a program on these cotton mills and I love seeing them. I've always been drawn to the past. Your Charleston is just 'alive' with it and I do so love the few times I've been on the home & garden and plantation tours there.
