Messengers

the dead send messages
on the wings of birds

in the language of loss

i sit in silence
listening

wounds so heavy
only silence helps
carry them

A Thing Made of Holes

"there is a time in life when you expect the world to be
always full of new things. and then comes a day when
you realize that is not how it will be at all. you see that
life will become a thing made of holes...absences...losses
things that were there and no longer. and you realize
too..that you have to grow around and between the gaps."

trying.....

Survived

so much
anger
against myself
it is not
my way
to
howl
over a
loss
one wing
crown missing
survived

Do Your Worst

there comes a time when you

need

to just sit with your

loss

wrap your arms around

yourself

and invite loss to do it's

worst

if you

survive

then you can deal
with what is

left

of yourself....

Written Across the Sky

if only

i could be other than
what i am

i can't

 one loss
too far

i'm now something
i can't name...or

understand

there is a certain
poetry to that

written across the sky

tucked in among the

stars

Where Are You Spark?

"so much depends upon the lighting of this fire...
so neatly laid. a platform of kindling...a floor of
fine twigs snapped from the underside of a fir...
a nest of shredded bark over which broken pine
branches are balanced to draw the flame upward.
plenty of fuel...plenty of oxygen. all the elements
are in place. but without the spark it is only a pile
of dead sticks. so much depends on the spark."

where are you
spark?

The Thread of All Sorrows

Kindness
naomi shihab nye

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things..
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand..
what you counted and carefully saved..
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside..
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore..
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day
to mail letters and purchase bread..
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say:
It is I you have been looking for..
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

today finds me feeling loss
deep in my bones as i watch
the thread of all sorrows
unravel...
